Movie number six is my first drama/thriller/horror movie review, excited ?!?! i was looking forward to this for a while, especially being a Gore Verbinski directored project.
So lets get into it, the synopsis….
An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious “wellness center” at a remote location in the Swiss Alps. He soon suspects that the spa’s miraculous treatments are not what they seem. When he begins to unravel its terrifying secrets, his sanity is tested, as he finds himself diagnosed with the same curious illness that keeps all the guests here longing for the cure. From Gore Verbinski, the visionary director of THE RING, comes the new psychological thriller, A CURE FOR WELLNESS.
The Cast ( I will just point out the main characters of the movie, if you like to see the full cast click here)
- Dane DeHaan – Lockhart
- Jason Isaacs – Volmer
- Mia Goth – Hannah
- Ivo Nandi – Enrico
So…I watched this on VOD and I have to say this movie is mind-bending mash-up of psychological horror, capitalist critique and old-fashioned folktale. There are red herrings galore. Its a much impressive film, particularly in terms of production design and cast. Jason Isaacs is great fun as Dr Heinrich Volmer, presiding over the institution with velvety menace; Mia Goth is suitably unearthly as Volmer’s ‘special case’ Hannah and the main man himself Dane DeHaan, probably the one of the most under appricated actors in Hollywood play an astute choice for the role of role of Lockhart. There’s two scenes of that really stood out for me, the first one is the dental work that genuinely shocked me by not cutting away at its most horrifying momenta and the second one when Volmer peels his face off. Any Gore Verbinski fan it’s a much watch and anyone looking for a good strong cast and storytelling it’s a must watch.
